The Enchanting Little Princess
Date: 2004-11-07
Country: USA
Rating: 5.4/10

At 23, Natalie Portman retains the Little Princess enchantment that she had at 12, when she became a star playing a long-legged dark-eyed nymphet, tarty and sweet. She discards her G-string in "Closer" with the same coy charm with which she tried on lipstick in that breakout role, in Luc Besson's 1994 cult classic "L้on" ("The Professional"). Although that movie has a disturbing plotline - an orphan moves in with the hit man next door (Jean Reno) after her family is killed by drug dealers - Ms. Portman's performance turns it into an updated Shirley-Temple-plays-Lolita fairy tale. Her character lacks the hardened edge of Jodie Foster's prostitute in "Taxi Driver" or the eerie blankness of Brooke Shields's "Pretty Baby"- the qualities that made you believe they were being sexually exploited. In "L้on," it's easy to delight in the orphan's prepubescent flirtation with the aging killer, because we don't believe anything bad will happen - or ever has happened - to the delightful child.
