Braff claims he was obsessed by Portman like everyone else when he wrote Garden State. The film’s emotional touchstone is vague unhappiness: the lead character lives, thanks to the generous dose of lithium his psychiatrist father prescribes for him, an insensate life, until he returns home to his small town, tries to reconnect with old friends, but winds up forging his strongest bond with a motormouthed pathological liar, played by Portman.
